Boulevard Tree Trimming
Street Maintenance crews perform all trimming of trees located within the boulevard.
Tree trimming takes place for a variety of reasons, including:
- Removal of dead limbs that could fall and cause damage or injuries.
- Removal of overgrown limbs that could obstruct large vehicle traffic such as emergency vehicles, street sweeper, or delivery vehicles.
- To establish good structure and maintain the tree’s shape.
- Storm-damaged boulevard trees are trimmed or removed depending on the damage severity.
The City of Owatonna asks that residents do not perform tree maintenance on trees located within the boulevard. To request boulevard tree maintenance, contact our office at 507-444-4350.
Please contact Owatonna Public Utilities (507-451-2480) when tree branches are interfering with overhead power lines.
These actions are in accordance with the City of Owatonna Code of Ordinances – §97.04 Planting, Removing Trees in Boulevards.
Boulevard Tree Removal
The city will remove trees that are determined to be diseased, dangerous or a public nuisance. Property owners who wish to have a boulevard tree adjacent to their property removed must make a request to the City of Owatonna Public Works Department, these removals must be approved by the City Forester. Stumps of removed trees are ground and the site is restored and seeded. No charge is made to the abutting property owner for these services.

Replacement Boulevard Trees:
Any tree ordered after June 9, 2023 will be planted in the Spring of 2024.
Boulevard trees that have been removed or lost during severe weather may be replaced by request from the property owner for a fee of $100 for large variety trees or $80 for small variety trees. The city will order, plant, and provide maintenance for the tree placed in the boulevard. We do ask that the property owner water the newly planted trees.
The City of Owatonna does not guarantee the survival of the trees planted. If the tree does not survive, City staff will remove the planted tree and the homeowner can request a replacement. Replacement tree fees are $100 per large tree and $80 per small tree.
All trees placed within the boulevard are to be planted by city staff.
