The department ensures that the City's infrastructure is safe and well maintained, which supports the quality of life and serves as a foundation of a healthy economy. As guided by the City's Strategic Plan, Public Works serves as a steward of the City's physical assets and ensures that residents live in a safe, secure, and thriving community.

Functions

The mission of the Public Works Department is to provide for the effective and efficient design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the City's infrastructure. In pursuit of this mission, the Public Works Department is organized into several divisions. These divisions work together to coordinate services and to achieve the following objectives:

  • To provide and maintain the municipal street, alley, and sidewalk systems
  • To provide convenient, well-maintained parking facilities in the downtown area
  • To provide quality fleet services through maintenance and repair, to prolong the life of City equipment
  • To provide and operate a community Waste Water Treatment Facility
  • To provide and operate a Municipal Seperate Storm Sewer System (MS4)
  • To provide and properly manage a yard waste compost site
  • To protect the environment through administration of programs and permits
  • To maintain a healthy and diverse urban forest
  • To provide utilities services to our customers in a safe, cost-effective manner
  • To provide design, maintenance, and construction of Owatonna's transportation system

Downtown Streetscaping Conceptual Plan 

The City of Owatonna is currently working on a vision for the downtown streetscape. This downtown streetscaping plan will help guide future improvements and development within the historic downtown area.  A conceptual plan has been created on an interactive map that allows the community to provide feedback.  Please take a look and let us know what you think!
