Requirements

Building permits are required for any construction beyond cosmetic alterations such as: 

  • Cabinets
  • Carpeting
  • Gutters
  • Painting
  • Trim Work

Work requiring building permits includes: 

  • Accessory buildings (zoning permits when applicable)
  • Decks
  • Demolition
  • Finishing basements
  • Footings
  • Insulating
  • Interior alterations (including major repairs to walls, subfloors, ceilings)
  • New and/or replacement windows
  • New construction
  • Remodeling
  • Replacement garage doors
  • Retaining walls over 48 inches in height or supporting a surcharge
  • Roofing
  • Siding

Inspections

Inspections include: 

  • Additions and alterations
  • Drywall (when applicable: residential-firewalls, commercial-all projects)
  • Final inspection of new construction
  • Footings
  • Foundation
  • Framing
  • Insulation
  • Radon (under-floor installation rock backfill and sealed vapor barrier)
  • Roofing underlayment/decking /flashing and final
  • Setbacks from property lines and grading
  • Siding installation/flashing/house wrap and final
  • Vapor barrier
  • Wall and roof sheathing (when applicable: shear walls/fire assemblies/braced wall lines)
  • Water proofing
  • Window flashing/installation and final
